Consumer Unit Upgrade with New TT Earthing

The Brief

This property needed a new consumer unit. As well as fitting the board itself, we needed to change the earthing arrangement: the existing PME earth was to be disconnected and the installation converted to a TT earthing system, with its own earth electrode in the ground outside. That meant a new consumer unit, a new earth rod and full testing to prove the whole installation was safe before we left.

What We Did

Our work included:

• Fitted the new board: A modern FuseBox consumer unit was installed with a main switch and individual RCBO protection on each circuit.
• Neat, organised wiring: Every circuit was terminated and dressed neatly inside the board so it is easy to inspect and work on in future.
• Converted the earthing from PME to TT: The PME earth was disconnected and a TT earthing arrangement installed in its place.
• Installed a new earth electrode: An earth rod was driven outside, with the earthing conductor run down the wall in protective conduit to the rod pit.
• Labelled the installation: Clear labels were fitted to the board stating that the PME earthing has been disconnected and a TT arrangement installed, along with the RCD test notices.
• Tested and certified: The new board and circuits were fully tested with a multifunction tester, and the work was certified on completion.

The Result

The property now has a modern RCBO consumer unit, a TT earthing system with its own earth electrode, and clear labelling at the board so anyone working on the installation in future knows exactly how it is earthed. Every circuit has its own RCBO, so a fault on one circuit won't take out the rest of the house, and the whole installation has been tested and certified.
