Bathroom Refurbishment Electrics
First fix to finished lighting in a full bathroom renovation
The Brief
This bathroom was being completely renovated, and the electrics needed to be done from scratch to suit the new layout. The finished room was to have a freestanding bath, a walk-in shower, recessed downlights, brass wall lights either side of the mirror, an extractor fan, a heated towel rail and electric underfloor heating. Bathrooms carry their own set of wiring rules, so every fitting and control had to be placed and protected with the room's electrical zones in mind.
What We Did
Our work included:
- Strip-out and first fix: With the old bathroom stripped out and the floorboards lifted, we ran new cables for the lighting, fan, towel rail and underfloor heating, leaving them dropped from the ceiling ready for the new layout.
- Downlights: Recessed LED downlights were fitted across the ceiling, including the sloped section, to give even light over the bath and shower.
- Extractor fan: An extractor fan was installed high on the wall to clear steam and moisture from the room.
- Brass wall lights: Two brass wall lights were wired in either side of the mirror.
- Heated towel rail: The electric supply for the heated towel rail was installed and connected.
- Underfloor heating controls: The underfloor heating thermostat was fitted alongside a three-gang switch for the lighting, keeping the controls together in one place.
- Bathroom zone compliance: Bathrooms are split into zones around the bath and shower, and each zone sets limits on what can be installed there. Fittings were chosen to suit the bathroom zones and the circuits are RCD protected, as the wiring regulations require.
- Tested and certified: Once second fix was complete, the new circuits were tested and the work certified.
The Result
A finished bathroom where the electrics suit the design: downlights across the ceiling, brass wall lights framing the mirror, a heated towel rail, an extractor fan and a warm floor controlled from its own thermostat. Everything was planned around the bathroom zones and tested before handover.
